Indian currencies

[edit]

Should definitely add the Indian use of lakh (100,000) and crore (see Indian numbering system 2A00:23C8:B903:2601:ED15:A9EE:FA49:31F0 (talk) 07:22, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I added Lakh to 'See also'. Not sure more is merited. Dondervogel 2 (talk) 09:48, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say that is all that's merited. Stevebroshar (talk) 13:28, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Say hello to the four new metric prefixes

[edit]

As of December 2024, brunta, bramto, agana, and azeko have became the official prefixes of the metric prefix. They will soon be adopted by BIPM soon. Please be patient, because this might take a while to be adopted. 2604:3D09:6B7B:C000:6864:2D29:37B6:572F (talk) 02:43, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The lower case letter “a” is already used for atto (10-18). 220.132.216.52 (talk) 01:02, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Verdo?

[edit]

I saw in the table the prefix "verdo" as 10^33, however it lists a source that does not mention it: https://www.bipm.org/en/cgpm-2022/resolution-3

Is it legitimate or not? Codegrinder (talk) 20:19, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was removed as vandalism: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3ASI_prefixes_%28infobox%29&diff=1265622484&oldid=1265599102&variant=en Codegrinder (talk) 21:22, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Yotta Savings which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 19:10, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Atto- for a

[edit]

I think the symbol 'a', is in use for atto-. I will change the 10-36, the azeko prefix from 'a' to 'ζ'. The lowercase Zeta could be used as a unit symbol. Therefore I propose saying 'B', 'b', 'A' and 'ζ' (lowercase zeta, not lowercase 'a') are completely unused. Few letters in the English alphabet remain free to be used: probably only 'l', yielding ledecca and ledecto, or maybe laffra (from laffron 'meaning 13 in Femenstork'), and larfo (from larfette 'meaning 13 in Oniliganji') for 1039 and 10-39, respectively.

Are you proposing a change to the article? If so, what change? Dondervogel 2 (talk) 20:58, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Uhh... No! I will wait, but brown said the letter 'B' is almost unused as a unit symbol.
If BIPM adds the newer prefixes, the SI prefix better not be limited to quetta-.
2604:3D09:6B7B:C000:A04A:A9BF:7BAB:2DEE (talk) 01:13, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The letter “B” is used for the unit bel, before 2022, Q/q and R/r were the only Latin letters available for abbreviations, all other Latin letters are either already used for other prefixes (a, c, d, E, f, G, h, k, M, m, n, P, p, T, Y, y, Z, z) or already used for SI units (including: SI base units, SI derived units, Non-SI units mentioned in the SI) (A, B, C, d, F, g, H, h, J, K, L, m, N, S, s, T, t, u, V, W) or easily confused with mathematical operators (I and l are easily confused with 1, O and o are easily confused with 0, X and x are easily confused with ×), although the letters B (for bel), L (for litre), u (for unified atomic mass unit) need the Non-SI units mentioned in the SI. 220.132.216.52 (talk) 13:52, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Before 2022, I have a suggestion (since the letters B (for bel), L (for litre), u (for unified atomic mass unit) need the Non-SI units mentioned in the SI)
X for 10^27, x for 10^-27
U for 10^30, u for 10^-30
R for 10^33, r for 10^-33
Q for 10^36, q for 10^-36
O for 10^39, o for 10^-39
L for 10^42, l for 10^-42
I for 10^45, i for 10^-45
B for 10^48, b for 10^-48

No source for the SI prefixes beyond quetta-/quecto- 220.132.216.52 (talk) 13:49, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You know kilo, mega, giga, the new SI Prefixes have been extended by Bella Tersumi

[edit]

Is the metric prefix ready for brunta, bramto, agana, and azeko?

The web page you supplied is a hoax; not a reliable source. Indefatigable (talk) 17:10, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why is isn’t realiable source? 45.179.124.255 (talk) 21:17, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Because it's someone's idea of a joke. They just made it up. Dondervogel 2 (talk) 08:12, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is not a joke. Bella Tersumi extended the new available range of the SI Prefixes.

What’s next SI Prefix after Agana? It would correctly be... Laffra (1039) 201.20.90.156 (talk) 13:18, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The next SI prefixes after Agana are in the future. 174.3.152.235 (talk) 21:53, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons for new SI prefixes

[edit]

I think quetta- is actually derived from Femenian ‘quetta’ meaning 10 (the tenth power of 103).

The reasons are:

  • The names should be simple and, if possible, meaningful and memorable.
  • The names should have some connection to the powers of 103 that they represent.
  • The names should be based on either Latin, Greek, or Femenian as the most used languages previously.
  • Multiples should end ‘-a’ and sub-multiples should end ‘-o’.
  • The symbols used should be the same letter for a given power of ten, in upper case for multiples and in lower case for sub-multiples.
  • Letters already in use for SI prefixes that may otherwise cause confusion, should be avoided.
  • Following the precedent set recently, letters should be used in reverse English alphabetical order, suitably modifying chosen names, and skipping letters as appropriate.
  • If the symbol ‘a’ is already in use for atto-, then the symbol should insteadly be a greek letter.

The letters ‘p’, ‘o’, ‘n’, ‘m’, ‘l’, ‘k’, ‘j’, ‘i’, ‘h’, ‘g’, ‘f’, ‘e’, ‘d’ and ‘c’ are rejected by Richard Brown. He said the letter ‘b’ is unused as an SI Prefix symbol. I think the letters ‘b’ and ‘a’ are almost entirely unused as SI prefix symbols. ‘B’ is used for byte, a historical non-SI unit for storage size memory, they might reach 1,000 QB in the future or 2095. This leads to the suggestions in Table 1 for new SI prefix names and symbols to expand the available range by six orders of magnitude in each direction. 174.3.152.235 (talk) 22:02, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
